What is an index?  What are the benefits of using an index system?

An index is a directory or catalog of items. So you would index your items in Paper Tiger by inputting item names and keywords relating to your physical items into the database. Paper Tiger has a powerful and easy-to-use search engine built in so that lost information is virtually eliminated in your office.
